“Playing Ball” Major League Baseball’s Way

with 37 comments

jackiesjersey.jpgWith all that was going on last summer it was difficult to deal with some of the larger issues of and problems with Major League Baseball. This spring and summer it is time to make time to dig in an explore MLB and baseball, in general, much more deeply. The following is the first of many articles and commentaries to be written this spring and summer on our National Pastime.

I smelled a rat in Major League Baseball’s summer of 2007 but could not find its carcass. There was something terribly wrong with MLB and baseball, in general. Everywhere I turned there was a scandal. Most had to do with “performance-enhancing drugs” (PEDs) like steroids and human growth hormone (HGH), but there were others like Tony LaRussa’s drunk driving charge and the specter of Ken Caminiti’s cocaine-induced death and his flat statement that perhaps 80% of MLB players were using PEDs. There was a rebirth of public knowledge of baseball’s private war with amphetamines used largely to recuperate from long hours of air travel followed by playing a baseball game some 12 hours later. But amphetamines are dangerous drugs and I wondered how many MLB players had a bottle of them at home.

A Black History Month Conversation with a White Friend

with 30 comments

(This conversation was started late last year and was finished recently. It was recorded – and I finally finished editing and transcribing it…. So here we go.)

A white friend and I were talking sports – of course.

“Man, it’s the year of the white man,” he said proudly.

“What the hell are you talking about?” I asked, incredulously.

“Dude, I’m tellin’ you, no offense D.K., but it’s our year.” Boxing, Rickey Hatton. Football, Brett Favre, Sportsman of the Year. Tim Tebow has the Heisman on lockdown. Who led the resurgence of the Colorado Rockies – white guys! Steve Nash is still the man in the NBA. Fatherhood has Tiger not even playing. Watch what happens to him next season. He’ll be lucky if he wins one major. Hell, Andy Roddick is still better than James Blake.”

Kelly Tilghman: In Plain View

By now we know the words – in reference to how young golfers should attempt to stop Tiger Woods – that came from Kelly Tilghman’s mouth.

“Lynch him in a back alley.”

Most of us also know that Tiger Woods called the incident a “non-issue.” His response, through his agent, Leigh Steinberg was this:

“It is a complete non-issue. Kelly and Tiger are friends. It might have been a poor choice of words, but there was absolutely no ill intent whatsoever.”

We cannot speculate as to whether or not that is his true feeling. What some people do not know is that on his first day of kindergarten Woods was grabbed and tied to a tree by a gaggle of sixth-graders who then spray painted “nigger” on him and then proceeded to throw rocks at the five-year old boy. We do not know if Tiger Woods recalls that moment each morning when he peers at his reflection in the mirror.
